Stop & Shop vs Acme: Who is Cheaper for Groceries?

One of the best ways to save money right now on groceries is to price compare between your local stores. This will ensure that you are getting the lowest prices and stay on your budget.

Today we will be doing a side by side comparison of Stop & Shop and Acme Markets to determine who has the cheapest prices for groceries. We will also see if we will save more money by just going to one store, or if it is worth it to shop our list at both stores. Let’s dig in to the numbers!

Is Acme Markets cheaper than Stop and Shop?

For this price comparison, I have made a meal plan for a family of 4 using “25 Cheap food that fills you up when you are broke!” as a guide. Our plan is to get groceries for a week that are healthy and cheap!

Here is our meal plan:

Breakfasts

  • Egg & Bacon Breakfast Burritos with Orange Slices
  • Muffins, Yogurt, & Diced Pears
  • Banana Smoothies and Scrambled Eggs
  • Banana Raisin Pancakes with Pancake Syrup and Diced Pears

Lunches

  • Sloppy Joe & Cheese Taquitos with sour cream
  • BLT wraps
  • Leftovers from Dinners

Dinners

  • Sloppy Joes with Carrot Salad and Homemade Potato Wedges
  • Tuna Casserole with Green Peas
  • Ground Beef Burrito Bowls with Rice, served with (lettuce, tomato, black beans, sour cream, & cheddar cheese)
  • Smoke Sausage Foil Packs with carrots, potatoes, & onion
  • Mississippi Chicken in the Crockpot served over white rice with Brussell Sprouts
  • One Pot Chicken Parmesan Pasta with Garlic Bread & Green Beans

Snacks

  • Orange Slices
  • Popcorn
  • Yogurt
  • Diced Pears

Sweet Treat

  • Easy Maple Cookies (uses pancake syrup)

For this price comparison, I am using prices available in Freehold, New Jersey. I will be selecting items for our meal plan that are the absolute cheapest.

This means mostly generic store brand options and the smallest size needed. This may not be the best value, but we are going for the cheapest option.

We are assuming that we already have kitchen basics like cooking oil, seasonings, salt/pepper, and baking powder at home. Everything else needed for the meal plan will need to be purchased.

Is Stop & Shop more expensive than Acme?

Stop and Shop was cheaper in almost all the sections, but let’s look at the overall totals.

SectionStop & Shop PriceAcme Price
Produce $17.34$18.78
Deli/Meats $29.31$30.17
Dry Goods $54.50$57.64
Frozen Foods $2.50$3.49
Dairy $24.44$23.73
Overall Total: (46 items)$128.09$133.81

Overall, Stop & Shop was cheaper than Acme with a total of $128.09. This was $5.72 (about 4%) cheaper than Acme’s total of $133.81.

If I had to choose one store, I would probably pick Stop and Shop because they did have the lower total price and we were able to get more meat than we did at Acme.

If I had the time to go to both stores or do a curbside pickup order, we could just buy the items that were cheapest at each store.

By doing this, our total would have been $118.19. That is an additional savings of $9.90 which is about 7%. $10 may not seem like much, but it is a great start to stocking our pantry and freezer for upcoming weeks!
