Tom Thumb vs Albertsons: Who is Cheaper?

In today’s world, where every penny counts, finding the best deals on groceries has become an essential part of budgeting. With multiple grocery stores to choose from, comparing prices can be a daunting task.

So today we will do a side-by-side comparison of Tom Thumb and Albertsons to see who has the cheapest groceries. We will also see if it is worth going to both stores to save even more money on our grocery budget. Let’s take a look!

Is Tom Thumb cheaper than Albertsons?

For this price comparison, I have made a meal plan for a family of 4 using “25 Cheap food that fills you up when you are broke!” as a guide. Our plan is to get groceries for a week that are healthy and cheap!

Here is our meal plan:

  • Egg & Bacon Breakfast Burritos with Orange Slices
  • Muffins, Yogurt, & Diced Pears
  • Banana Smoothies and Scrambled Eggs
  • Banana Raisin Pancakes with Pancake Syrup and Diced Pears

Lunches

  • Sloppy Joe & Cheese Taquitos with sour cream
  • BLT wraps
  • Leftovers from Dinners

  • Ground Beef Burrito Bowls with Rice, served with (lettuce, tomato, black beans, sour cream, & cheddar cheese)

  • One Pot Chicken Parmesan Pasta with Garlic Bread & Green Beans

Snacks

  • Orange Slices
  • Popcorn
  • Yogurt
  • Diced Pears

Sweet Treat

  • Easy Maple Cookies (uses pancake syrup)

For this price comparison, I am using prices available in Fort Worth, Texas. I will be selecting items for our meal plan that are the absolute cheapest.

This means mostly generic store brand options and the smallest size needed. This may not be the best value, but we are going for the cheapest option.

We are assuming that we already have kitchen basics like cooking oil, seasonings, salt/pepper, and baking powder at home. Everything else needed for the meal plan will need to be purchased.

Is Tom Thumb more expensive than Albertsons?

Both stores had the exact same products, and only 2 items were not in stock at both locations. Let’s look at the overall totals.

SectionTom Thumb PriceAlbertsons Price
Produce $17.71$17.71
Deli/Meats $17.29$17.29
Dry Goods $52.82$52.12
Frozen Foods $4.98$4.98
Dairy $20.33$20.33
Overall Total: (46 items)$113.13$112.43

Overall, Tom Thumb and Albertsons came out to pretty close the same total of about $113.

This is because Tom Thumb was bought out by Albertsons, and they now stock the same products. These two stores in Ft. Worth only had a difference in price on the muffin mix and the canned tuna.

They both offered the same exact products, but one store showed that it was out of stock. That is what caused the $0.70 (less than 1%) difference in the totals.

In regard to determining which store to go to, I would have chosen Albertsons just because they had everything in stock this week. That may be different on other weeks.

I did not see the point in going to both stores to try to save money. Honestly it doesn’t matter which store you go to between Tom Thumb and Albertsons, so pick the one that is nearest to you and most convenient to go shopping at based on your location.
