Realistic Family Meal Plan on a Budget for a Week ($85 at Walmart)

This week, I got out of my comfort zone a little bit and tried a new strategy. I am using the 6 to 1 grocery method to pick out certain ingredients, and then use those to make a week’s worth of meals!

The 6 to 1 grocery method has you pick out the following items:

  • 6 vegetables
  • 5 fruits
  • 4 proteins
  • 3 starches
  • 2 sauces
  • 1 treat

So, this is how my 6 to 1 menu started:

  1. Cake Mix
  2. Sweet Thai Chili Sauce and Honey Mustard Sauce
  3. Sweet Potatoes, Pasta, and Rice
  4. London Broil, Chicken Thighs, Ground Turkey, Breakfast Sausage
  5. Strawberries, Pears, Peaches, Pineapple, and Granny Smith Apples
  6. Lettuce, Mini Cucumbers, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Eggplant, and Tomatoes

I tried to do a nice mix of flavors and colors to try to be more creative with my meals. I also picked items that were relatively inexpensive. I did splurge a little on the London Broil and Strawberries, but overall, we did great on our $100 budget!

This whole meal plan when priced at the Houston, Texas Walmart, came out to only $84.90 plus tax! That gives you plenty of wiggle room if you need more items or extra snacks.
