Grocery Price Showdown: Publix vs Greer’s
Next for our showdown this week is Publix and Greer’s. Both stores are common in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi, but Greer’s only has 29 locations compared to Publix’s 1300 locations.
We like to compare real shopping lists of a what a typical family might buy to see how the prices really add up. Both stores use Instacart for online shopping so we know that their prices may be a little bit higher than in person.
Key Takeaways
- Greer’s was cheaper by 17% but was still almost 30% higher than the local Walmart.
- Greer’s did have a good amount of items on sale, so that definitely helped them this week!
- Publix meat prices were very high and not on sale, so I think that made a huge difference.
Meal Plan and Grocery List
This week’s menu is a low budget meal plan for a Family of 4 for under $100. This includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and a sweet treat.
Here is the strategic shopping list for this meal plan:
Our total came out to $72.05 at the local Walmart in Pensacola, FL. Let’s see how Greer’s and Publix compare and if they can come out under $100.

Greer’s was definitely cheaper compared to Publix. Their total was $20.85 less than Publix’s total.
I was a little disappointed that both stores were over our $100 grocery budget.
Food for Thought
I always like to see if shopping multiple stores will save us any money! So, if we only bought the cheapest items at each store, our total would have been $98.89.
That would be an additional savings of $2.66 but it did get us under $100. I don’t know that the 2.62% savings would be worth it to me.
I could potentially spend more than that in gas to go to both locations. So unless, it was super convenient to go to both stores, I would probably just shop at Greer’s this week!
