Weis vs Giant Foods: Who is Cheaper for Groceries?

Comparing prices across different grocery stores in your area can be a money-saving strategy, allowing you to find the best deals and discounts on your desired items.

Today we will be doing a side-by-side price comparison of Weis and Giant to determine who is cheaper for groceries. We will also see if going to just one store is cheaper, or if you can save even more money by shopping at both grocery stores!

Is Weis cheaper than Giant?

For this test, I have prepared a meal plan for one week that consists of breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and dinners for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 young kids). I am using the 25 Cheap foods List as my guide to pick not only healthy foods but also ones that should be fairly cheap.

Here is the meal plan for this grocery trip:

Breakfasts

  • Peanut Butter Toast with Bananas x2
  • Overnight Oats with Apples and Raisins x3
  • Scrambled Eggs with Cheese on top and Toast x2

Lunches

  • Tuna Salad Sandwiches x 2
  • Veggie & Pepperoni Pasta Salad with Zesty Italian Dressing
  • Salad Wraps with tomato, cucumber, and cheese
  • Leftovers

Snacks

  • Carrots
  • Apples
  • Popcorn

Dinners

  • Baked Whole Chicken with rice and sautéed carrots
  • Leftover Chicken in a Pasta with Alfredo Sauce, Broccoli, and side salad
  • Ground Turkey Tacos with Corn and Refried Beans
  • Leftover Taco Meat in a Mexican Baked Potato Bar with Side Salads
  • Pork Loin with Mashed Potatoes and Corn
  • Hawaiin Pizza with Leftover Pork, Pepperoni, and Pineapple (using a little Alfredo Sauce as the Base)

Sweet Treat

  • Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

For this meal plan, I am going to shop at both stores and look for the best deals on price. We will be using prices in Allentown, Pennsylvania for this store comparison.

Most items will be the generic store brand, and I will be aiming to get my groceries needed for the cheapest price available.

Even though my pantry is very well stocked, for this experiment I will shop as if I only have the bare basics at home like seasonings, salt, sugar, and cooking oil. For a full breakdown of this meal plan, and how I would make it work, check out Cheap Meal Plan for Week #1.

In the dairy section,

Is Giant Food Stores more expensive than Weis Market?

There was no clear winner in the sections, so let’s look at overall totals.

SectionWeis PriceGiant Price
Produce $18.61$15.81
Deli/Meats $23.08$22.19
Dry Goods $32.19$34.84
Frozen Foods $3.28$3.48
Dairy $12.87$13.35
Overall Total (36 items)$90.03$89.67

Overall, Giant was cheaper than Weis with a total of $89.67. This was $0.36 (less than 1%) cheaper than Weis’s total.

Wow! I think this is the closest totals we have ever had! I believe Giant would have come out even better if they had more yeast options available online, but they only had the 4oz jars.

If we could only go to one store, I would probably stick with Giant for my grocery shopping since they did come out cheaper overall.

If I had the time to go to both stores or do pick up orders at both locations, I could have potentially saved even more money. By only buying what was cheaper at each store, our total would have been $77.84. That is an additional savings of $11.83 (about 13%) more money in our pocket!

If our grocery budget was $100, then shopping at both stores would have given us $22.16 to be used towards savings, sinking funds, or stocking up on food items at great prices!
