Grocery Price Showdown: Giant Food vs Harris Teeter

Today we will compare prices at Giant Food and Harris Teeter to see which store comes out with the cheapest prices for groceries.

I like to compare a real grocery list for a family of four, rather than a random list of items. I think most people shop for a week, so this is a good comparision.

Is Giant Cheaper than Harris Teeter?

Giant is owned by the same company as Food Lion and Hannaford grocery stores. Harris Teeter is owned by the Kroger Company, so it will be interesting to see how the prices vary.

Is Harris Teeter Cheaper than Giant Foods?

So Giant Foods actually won this grocery price showdown against Harris Teeter! They had an overall total of $125.18. They were $4.36 or about 3% cheaper than Harris Teeter’s total of $129.54.

Food for Thought

Both stores actually had a lot of the items on our list on sale, so if we took advantage of the lowest prices at each store, we may be able to get closer to our $100 grocery budget!

If we only bought what was cheaper at each store, our total would have been $110.79. That is an additional savings of $14.39 (about 11%).

I would say it is worth the time and effort to shop both places. If you can’t physically go to both locations, you could easily do a pick up order!
