Fred Meyer vs Target Prices: Who is Cheaper?

Fred Meyer is a very popular grocery store in the Northwest and is part of the Kroger Co. Target has been expanding its offerings into the grocery market across the US.

We are going to make a weeklong meal plan with a grocery list and price compare Fred Meyer and Target. At the end, we will determine which store has the cheapest prices for groceries. Scroll to the end to see the verdict!

Is Fred Meyer cheaper than Target?

For this price comparison, I have made a meal plan for a family of 4 using “25 Cheap food that fills you up when you are broke!” as a guide. Our plan is to get groceries for a week that are healthy and cheap!

Here is our meal plan:

Breakfasts

  • Scrambled Eggs with Homestyle Potatoes (chunky hash browns using leftover baked potatoes)
  • French Toast with Pancake Syrup
  • Apple Pie Overnight Oats (sauteed apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, pancake syrup, and quick oats)

Lunches

  • Baked Potato with leftover taco seasoned ground turkey
  • Grilled Cheese with Carrot Sticks & Tortilla Chips
  • White Bean Hummus with Carrots
  • Salads with Tomato, Cucumber, and Cheese
  • Dinner Leftovers

Dinners

  • Teriyaki Chicken with broccoli and rice (sauce made with brown sugar and soy sauce)
  • Creamy Spinach Chicken and Pasta (leftover chicken, creamed spinach, tomatoes, and pasta) served with side salad
  • Chicken and Rice Soup (leftover chicken, rice, chicken bouillon, and mixed vegetables) with Toasted Butter Bread
  • Turkey Hamburgers with Homemade Potato Wedges
  • Cheesy Tuna Melts on Hamburger Buns (tuna, ranch dressing, and cheese) with side salads and sauteed apples
  • Taco Pasta (ground turkey, black beans, canned rotel style tomatoes, taco seasoning, and tortilla chips)

Snacks

  • Apples
  • Carrot sticks with ranch dressing
  • Tortilla Chips

Sweet Treat

  • Vanilla Ice Cream with Pancake Syrup

For this price comparison, I am using prices available in Idaho Falls, Idaho. I will be selecting items for our meal plan that are the absolute cheapest.

This means mostly generic store brand options and the smallest size needed. This may not be the best value, but we are going for the cheapest option.

We are assuming that we already have kitchen basics like cooking oil, seasonings, salt/pepper, and baking powder at home. Everything else needed for the meal plan will need to be purchased.

Technically Target came out cheaper in the meat section with a total of $16.27. This was $5.85 cheaper than Fred Meyer with a total of $22.12.

It is worth noting that we bought almost 2lbs more of chicken breasts at Fred Meyer. Target only had frozen options available for chicken. (Some locations offer lots more fresh meats, but this location does not seem to have much.)

Is Target or Fred Meyer cheaper?

This was actually very close in most sections. Let’s check out the overall totals.

SectionFred Meyer PriceTarget Price
Produce $12.97 $16.50
Deli/Meats $22.12 $16.27
Dry Goods $22.94 $23.08

Dairy $13.45 $13.35
Overall Total: (32 items)$78.25$76.26

Overall Target came out cheaper than Fred Meyer with a total of $76.26. This was a difference of $1.99 (about 2%) cheaper than Fred Meyer’s total of $78.25.

If you have a Target Red Card you could save an additional 5% off your total so that will actually increase your savings to about 7% compared to Fred Meyer.

If Fred Meyer and Target are my options for grocery shopping, I would go to Fred Meyer’s for produce and meat. Then do the rest of my shopping for dry goods, frozen, and dairy at Target.

The best thing to do would be to look at the weekly sales flyer and use that to build a cheap and affordable meal plan for the week based on what is on sale!
