Food Lion vs Aldi: Who is Cheaper?

Food Lion is a pretty large chain of grocery stores with 1103 locations in 10 states in the US. Aldi is a bit bigger grocery store chain with 1800 stores in 35 states all across the US.

To determine if Food Lion or Aldi is cheaper for groceries, we will do a side-by-side price comparison of a week’s worth of groceries. Scroll to the end to see the final verdict!

Is Aldi cheaper than Food Lion?

For this test, I have prepared a meal plan for one week that consists of breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and dinners for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 young kids). I am using the “25 Cheap food that fills you up when you are broke!” as my guide to pick not only healthy foods but also ones that should be fairly cheap.

Here is the meal plan for this grocery trip:

Breakfasts

  • Peanut Butter Toast with Bananas x2
  • Overnight Oats with Apples and Raisins x3
  • Scrambled Eggs with Cheese on top and Toast x2

Lunches

  • Tuna Salad Sandwiches x 2
  • Veggie & Pepperoni Pasta Salad with Zesty Italian Dressing
  • Salad Wraps with tomato, cucumber, and cheese
  • Leftovers

Snacks

  • Carrots
  • Apples
  • Popcorn

Dinners

  • Baked Whole Chicken with rice and sautéed carrots
  • Leftover Chicken in a Pasta with Alfredo Sauce, Broccoli, and side salad
  • Ground Turkey Tacos with Corn and Refried Beans
  • Leftover Taco Meat in a Mexican Baked Potato Bar with Side Salads
  • Pork Loin with Mashed Potatoes and Corn
  • Hawaiin Pizza with Leftover Pork, Pepperoni, and Pineapple (using a little Alfredo Sauce as the Base)

Sweet Treat

  • Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

For this meal plan, I am going to shop at both stores and look for the best deals on price. We will be using prices in Glasgow, Kentucky. for this store comparison.

Most items will be the generic store brand, and I will be aiming to get my groceries needed for the cheapest price available.

Even though my pantry is very well stocked, for this experiment I will shop as if I only have the bare basics at home like seasonings, salt, sugar, and cooking oil. It is worth noting that Aldi’s smallest bag of shredded cheese is only available in 12oz bags, so we did get more cheese than at Food Lion. Same thing with sour cream. So, for the dairy section, Aldi was a better value!

Is Food Lion more expensive than Aldi?

There was a little back and forth and one store was not cheaper for all sections. Let’s look at the overall totals!

SectionFood Lion PriceAldi Price
Produce $15.38$14.34
Deli/Meats $16.46$20.28
Dry Goods $28.35$35.51
Frozen Foods $2.78$2.00
Dairy $11.07 $13.07
Overall Total$74.04$85.20

Overall, Food Lion was cheaper than Aldi with a total of $74.04. This was $11.16 (about 13%) cheaper than Aldi’s total of $85.20.

One of the downsides of Aldi is that they offer limited options and limited sizes. This means that for some things like cheese and sour cream, I had to purchase more than I really needed.

This is great for stocking up, but not so great for trying to buy a week’s worth of groceries as cheaply as possible.

We could have saved a little bit more money by breaking our list up and buying items at each location that had the best deals. For instance, buy meat at Food Lion but pick up eggs and milk at Aldi.

If I am only going to one store, I will be much more likely to just swing by Food Lion. If you use the weekly sales ad to make your meal plan and shop what is on sale, you could potentially save even more money.

Food Lion has a program called “Shop & Earn” where you not only get digital coupons and savings, but you can also collect cash back off your total. Plus you will want to sign up for their MVP card that gives you access to all sale prices.
