Bland Deviled Eggs? 40 ideas to make them better!

Whether you are going to a summer barbecue or a Holiday dinner, deviled eggs are such a great appetizer or side dish.

Unfortunately, we sometimes get used to the same old deviled egg recipe and need some new flavors to make them less boring.

Here are 40 excellent ideas to turn your bland deviled eggs into a dish everyone keeps asking for over and over!

How do you fix bland in deviled eggs?

In order to fix bland and boring deviled eggs you may just need to switch up some of your ingredients!

1. Dijon Mustard

Instead of boring plain yellow mustard, add a little zing with Dijon mustard instead!

2. Sweet Barbeque Sauce

This is perfect for a barbeque themed meal or just as a sweet surprise. This extra sweetness will take your deviled eggs up a notch!

3. White Sugar

If barbeque sauce is a little too crazy, you can always add a pinch of white sugar to the mix for a little sweetness.

4. Curry Powder

Add a little curry powder to the egg mixture for some extra flavor. Don’t add too much or you won’t be able to taste the egg at all.

5. Worcestershire Sauce

Add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce to your egg mix for more flavor. This would go really well as a side to grilled cheeseburgers or even steak.

6. Horseradish

Add a little fiery flavor to your deviled eggs with some horseradish! This would be excellent served with roast beef, pork, or sausage.

7. Pickle Juice

Get the awesome dill flavor without the chunks of relish in the deviled eggs. This is especially important if you plan to use a piping bag to fill your deviled eggs. For more ways to use pickle juice, check out “Frugal Food: Pickle Juice (60+ uses in food & drinks!)

8. White Vinegar

If you’re not a fan of pickle relish or dill flavor, you can get the same acidic flavor by adding a splash of white vinegar to your egg mixture.

9. Hot Sauce

If you want a little heat and acidity, try a little hot sauce in the egg mixture. Another way is to put a drop of hot sauce on the hardboiled egg white, before you pipe in your filling. This gives the deviled egg a kick but doesn’t overpower the rest of the flavors.

10. Honey Mustard

Want a little sweet but not a fan of barbeque sauce? Try using honey mustard in your egg mixture!

11. Sour Cream

Instead of making your egg mixture with mayonnaise, try some sour cream. This not only keeps the mixture creamy but also adds a different flavor. A perfect substitution for those that are not a fan of mayonnaise.

12. Ranch Dressing

In a hurry and want to make deviled eggs super quick? Smash your egg yolks and then add ranch dressing. This gives enough liquid to bind and it already has a great seasoning blend. This is another alternative for those who don’t like mayonnaise very much!

13. Pepperoncini Juice

Similar to using pickle juice but will give a great unique flavor. The pepperoncini juice always remind me of Greek Salads, so I would top these deviled eggs with a sliced olive or even a sprinkle of feta cheese!

14. Chopped Olives

Instead of using dill or sweet pickle relish, try using chopped green or black olives. You will get the acidity needed to bring out the egg flavor and the fabulous salty olive flavor too. These would be so good next to a Chef or Chopped salad!

15. Cream Cheese

Use a little cream cheese to bind your eggs and you will have a smooth and creamy taste! This is another great alternative for mayonnaise in your egg mixture.

16. Plain Greek Yogurt

Skip the mayonnaise and try using plain Greek yogurt. The creamy texture and tangy flavor are sure to fix any bland in your deviled eggs.

17. Dried Mustard Powder

This is a great way to add the mustard flavor but not have bright yellow eggs. The taste is similar to liquid mustard but not as overpowering.

18. Pickled Eggs

Instead of plain hard-boiled eggs, you can pickle your eggs in beet juice with a little pickling spice, sugar, vinegar, peppercorns, and sliced red onion. This not only adds a ton of flavor, but it will make your deviled eggs the most gorgeous pink color on the outside. Perfect for an Easter celebration!

19. Make them “Loaded”

Similar to a loaded baked potato, you will add shredded cheddar cheese and chopped bacon to your egg mixture. These are so yummy; you will probably need to make a double recipe!

20. Instant Potatoes

Here me out on this one…. if your deviled eggs tend to get runny, you can add a little dry instant potato flakes to your mixture to absorb the excess liquid. This will keep them nice and firm and keep them from melting away in your serving dish!

21. Deviled Ham

Eggs and Ham are such a classic combo, so it only makes sense the mixing a can of deviled ham into the egg mixture will be tasty. Just remember that deviled ham can get salty so skip any adding any additional salt to the mixture.

22. Zesty Italian Dressing

The zingy and bold taste of zesty Italian dressing is so good with eggs. I even use it to make egg salad sometimes! Easy substitution for mayonnaise and a great flavor enhacer.

23. Fresh Dill

Not only is fresh dill usually available in every grocery store, but it is super cheap too. I love to add it to deviled eggs, but you have to chop it very fine. The flavor can be a little too much if you get a giant sprig in your egg.

24. Avocado

Avocado is such a great smooth flavor when mixed with eggs. It will also give your eggs mixture a beautiful pastel green color that is perfect for Christmas or Easter. For Christmas you can top with a little piece of picked red pepper to add a little extra to your appetizer table. (This can also be a substitute for mayonnaise too!)

25. Imitation Crab Meat

You can mix a little imitation crab meat with your egg mixture for a little extra special. These are a fabulous appetizer substitute for cocktail shrimp. You get the great seafood flavor, but it is a much cheaper option!

26. Coleslaw Dressing

I had some leftover coleslaw dressing, but we were over coleslaw, so I used it in deviled eggs. It was delicious! It already has the acid in it, and it is so creamy just like mayonnaise.

27. Melted Butter

It is true, butter makes everything better! By adding cooled melted butter to your egg mixture, you can really up the creamy factor and the butter flavor is to die for!

Deviled Egg Toppers

Sometimes it isn’t the egg mixture that is missing something, it is the top of the egg! Try one of these deviled egg toppers for a cute garnish that also adds flavor to step up your deviled egg platter.

28. Everything Bagel Seasoning

Top your deviled eggs with Everything Bagel seasoning for a new flavor combo! You better make double because these will go fast.

29. Bacon Bits

Seriously, bacon makes everything better, right? This not only adds some flavor but a little crunch to your eggs. This can also make a more filling appetizer if you are not serving a big meal.

30. Chili Powder

Instead of sprinkling you eggs with paprika, try a little chili powder instead for a kick of heat and flavor. (Since chili powder and paprika look very similar, you may want to add a little sign to let people know these have a little heat!)

31. Slap your Mam Cajun Seasoning

If you’re looking for a little spice and extra flavor, try some Cajun seasoning. These would be so good if you are having a crab boil or fried fish!

32. Smoked Paprika

Skip the regular paprika and try smoked paprika for a rich and bold flavor. This is especially good with barbeque style foods.

33. Green Onions

This is a great way to add a bit of onion flavor but not to overwhelm the overall flavor. Plus, if anyone is not a fan of onions, they can brush them off.

34. Chives

Not only does chives add a beautiful green garnish, but they also add a very mild flavor similar to leeks but not as strong as onions.

35. Pickled Jalapeno

You can leave the slice whole or chop them up to add a little heat and zing to your deviled eggs.

36. Bacon Jam

I had never heard of Bacon Jam before I tried it and oh my goodness it is awesome! Just add a little bit to the top of your deviled eggs for all the bacon flavor with a hint of sweetness.

37. Candied Jalapenos

Also known as cowboy caviar, using candied jalapenos will add a little heat and a little sweet without the vinegary taste of pickled jalapenos.

38. Pineapple Bits

On top of each deviled egg, you can add a canned pineapple tidbit! These are oh so yummy with a honey baked ham or a Caribbean/ Hawaiian themed party.

39. Dried Dill

This is another great garnish that you can add for a bit of color and some flavor. Dill and eggs are a great flavor combination.

40. Capers

For some reason, I always think of capers as fancy! So, these little cute green balls are a perfect way to add a salty and vinegary taste to your deviled eggs.
