Simple French Toast Flavors Anyone Can Make at Home
I have a confession… I don’t really love maple syrup or pancake syrup and I usually avoid it at all costs. But some dishes like French toast really seem to need it on top.
So over the years, I have experimented with all kinds of fun flavors to get all the French toast goodness without drowning it in syrup.
Now you can totally still add syrup to these if that is your thing, but honestly I do not think they need it. You do you boo!
French Toast Recipes
Caramel Latte French Toast
A splash of coffee and caramel syrup in the batter gives you a cozy café-style breakfast right at home. If you do not have caramel syrup, brown sugar with a tiny bit of butter melted in makes a great stand-in.

Chai Spice French Toast
This French toast is warm and comforting with cooled chai tea, milk, and gentle spices mixed directly into the batter. If you run out of chai tea, use all milk and simply add a bit more cinnamon and ginger for flavor.

Cherry French Toast
Cherry juice or grenadine gives this French toast a light fruit flavor and a pretty blush color. If you want a stronger cherry taste, you can swap the milk for half milk and half cherry juice without making it too sweet.

Coconut Cream French Toast
Coconut milk makes this French toast soft, rich, and lightly tropical. If you don’t have canned coconut milk, using regular milk with a splash of heavy cream adds richness so you still get a similar feel.

Eggnog French Toast
Eggnog makes the batter extra rich and creamy, giving this French toast a holiday feel without any effort. If you do not have eggnog, half-and-half mixed with a little vanilla and nutmeg gives a similar richness.

Honey Nut French Toast
Honey and almond extract create a soft, nutty sweetness that cooks right into every slice. If you prefer a milder flavor, you can swap the almond extract for vanilla so the honey becomes the star.

Orange Cream French Toast
This brings a bright citrus flavor by mixing orange juice and vanilla right into the batter. If you want even more citrus, you can swap the milk for half-and-half to make it extra creamy without muting the orange flavor.

Pumpkin Spice French Toast
This French toast tastes like fall in every bite with pumpkin purée and warm spices mixed right into the batter. If you are out of pumpkin puree, a spoonful of applesauce still gives you a cozy, slightly sweet flavor that works beautifully.

Fun Twists on French Toast
French toast does not have to be fancy or covered in syrup to taste amazing. A few small mix ins can completely change the flavor and make breakfast feel fun again without any extra work.
The best part is that once you start playing around with the batter, you can come up with your own ideas based on what you already have at home. Breakfast should be cozy, simple, and delicious, and these easy twists are the perfect place to start.
